Outbound Program: Studying in Chile
- Students will live with a local Chilean family who is carefully selected by the coordinator in Chile.
- Students will be attending San Mateo high school or Osorno College high school in Osorno, Chile. They are both coed schools about the same size as our local high schools, about 1,400 students.
- The Osorno coordinator teaches English at San Mateo high school. She will be available to help students throughout the stay.
- Students will have a bed either in their own room or a share a room with their host brother or sister.
- All three daily meals are provided by the host family. But if students choose to eat at a cafeteria, they need to use their own spending money.
- Students will audit classes but they are expected to participate in class and complete all assignments and tests in class. Although they will not receive credits, independent study credit for Spanish class can be earned. Students should talk to their Spanish teacher prior to departure to arrange for independent study credits. Community service hours can also be earned. This should also be arranged prior to departure. Students should talk to their academic counselor before departure to discuss graduation requirements, international baccalaureate (IB) and advanced placement (AP) test schedules, academic standing, schedule upon returning.
- Computer time will be limited. Students will be in Chile to learn to speak Spanish!
- Students are NOT allowed to drive or ride a motorcycle.
- We have a no tolerance alcohol and drug policy for visiting students. Involvement with illegal drugs or alcohol during this program is grounds for immediate dismissal from the program.
- Oversight of exchanges and host family matching is done by Sandra Maldonado in Osorno, Chile and Sachiko Itoh in Eugene.
